In context this was impossibly ambiguous, since the preceding sentence used content to refer to the content of a text. Rewrite: "Material social reality can manifest itself in different judicial forms." Wages and salaries are judicial forms, the content of which is *usually* variable capital, but it can also as in the case of Eisner represent a share of surplus value. That would also be the case for those handful of academic "stars" that Yoshie speaks of. They are not working class, they are not petty producers, they are members (albeit junior members) of the capitalist class. But their numbers are too small to be of demographic significance, and one may call them cops [i.e., scabs] if one wants to.
