Alec Cat Baby!!

Frances is talking about men, esp. in academia who like to 'confess' their homoerotic desires publically so they won't have to be placed among the straight white upper middle class male crowd, and thus bearing the burden of being pricks with no redeeming qualities--no oppression points, no oppression card to play, etc. (Which is a sad commentary on the way in which this all gets played out anyway, as Yoshie pointed out already: in the attempt to disavow essentialism (and thus universalism, violence, oppresion, et al) poststruc and pomo work, even when rigorous as possible, often gets used for a kind of essentialist "i'm more oppressed than though' politics that is utterly nauseating sometimes.

Not quite lesbian chic. And no, it's certainly not widespread but nonetheless an annoying tendency yet. Still a shameful attempt to appropriate an identity without ever having to *really* live out the consequences.
