Life in prison for stealing food

The prison-industrial complex is on to a good thing.  By siphoning money from
education and other social programs, they can create conditions that lead to
more crime, requiring stricter laws, justifying more prisons, siphoning off
still more money.

I suspect Christian Parenti's new book will cover some of this.
