Leaving to one side whether or not it's a good idea, do you really believe anyone, much less Clinton & Co., can predict the future 15 years in advance? Besides, it's not like going to CCC and consolidating your debt and making those monthly payments. By asserting the idea of paying down the debt, he is espousing a political vision that will guide how approaches taxing and spending.
Next year (or 4 or 5 years down the road), the latest fad will likely be something else and budget priorities will change. So will the level of debt carried by the US gov't. It will move up or down based on that and nothing Clinton says this year will have much to do with it. I guess I just don't see it as any big deal to make the claim that he has and so it doesn't really move me.
