No, he's not, but he's the loudest (most bankrolled). The Labor Party
has put forward a plan for a fair trade not free trade campaign at their
recent convention. They are also planning on bringing up the issues of
single payer, social security and the right to organize. Unfortunately,
the LP is not running candidates at this this time. The analysis for
their non-electoral stance gets complicated, suffice it to say that the
Party is not big enough yet and the officials at the head of the Party
are also afraid of stepping on labor bureaucrat toes too soon. For
fuller coverage, see Against the Current at www.labornet.org/solidarity,
the labor party website (the previous site has a link). Also, see an
excellent article on strategy for the LP by Paul LeBlanc at the Labor
Standard web site (sorry dont have their address either- use a search
engine). Paul writes about what actions would be necessary on the part
of the Party to make these campaigns real up to the national level.
I would urge all of you left intellectuals to join SAWSJ (Scholars,
Activists and Writers for Social Justice) if you havent already-it's one
way to connect with the labor left. You can contact Labor Notes for
more information (linked to the Solidarity web site)., or I think that
the AFL-CIO would also be able to tell you how to join.
