and, the minute you begin to define, unless you are also willing to open such definitions to contestation -- ie., unless you are prepared to note the difficulty of definitions and the unavoidable gaps that any definitions would produce and rely upon -- then you are lying. which is not a moral claim, but a recognition of an inadequacy. dialectics is one way of noting, working through and on, this difficulty and openess to contestation and contradiction. understanding does not presuppose a consensus, moreover.
