The May 1999, Monthly Review is is a special 100-page
issue that is guest edited by Christopher Phelps
and marks the fiftieth anniversary of the magazine.
The guest editor, Christopher Phelps, is editorial director
for Monthly Review Press and is the author of *Young Sidney Hook:
Marxist and Pragmatist*. Phelps kicks off this issue
with a history of the magazine, with accounts of its founders
including Paul Sweezy, Paul Baran, Leo Huberman and
Harry Magdoff. In this issue are interviews with all
three editors of the magazine including Paul Sweezy,
Harry Magdoff, and Ellen Meiskins Wood. Each of them
gives his or hers take on the magazine's past, present,
and future.
