Of course there's also the fact that Germany invaded almost every country in Europe over a 2 year period, and helping another country to defend itself is also a legitimate reason for intervention.

I should add that US actions such as firebombing of German and Japanese cities and the use of the atomic bomb were unjustified, even though the entrance of the US into the war was legitimate.
