uh, please review the clinton administration's accomplishments vis a vis welfare reform and the environment and tell me what makes it dumber to vote for a republican. it would be easier to make the converse case, given what the clintonites wrought under cover of "bipartisanship."

I partly agree. (Qualification: though I voted for Democrats from 1952 through 1964, I *now* don't think they've run a candidate worth voting for, at any time.) But the point of the factoid has to do not with the reality of the Democratic Party but with its "image," which Reed (and I) would argue these voters are rejecting -- an "image" of being progressive in respect to race and gender.
