LM debate:
'Foxhunting - a bloody outrage or just good sport?'
Dr Richard Ryder, author and past chairman of the RSPCA Mike Huskisson, wildlife and investigating consultant, League Against Cruel Sports vs Roger Scruton, writer and philosopher Mick Hume, editor of LM
Dr Richard Ryder: 'Foxhunting is cruel and out of date. It damages the countryside, and humane alternative sports are available.'
Mike Huskisson: 'The pastime of hunting foxes with packs of dogs, a game for the gutless (and chinless), is a particularly nasty form of bullying that should have no place in a modern, compassionate society.'
Roger Scruton: 'Hunting is no more cruel than shooting or fishing. It holds rural communities together at a time when pressures are blowing them apart. I am deeply opposed to legislation imposed on minorities, by majorities who don't understand what they do.'
Mick Hume: 'We should not allow the government to dictate what is and is not an acceptable way to behave. Whether hunting is up your street or not, it is worth being bold in defending freedom.'
The debate will take place on 21 October 1999 at 7.30pm (please arrive early)
Venue: Small Hall, Friends House, 173-177 Euston Road, London NW1 2BJ
Tickets: £6/£4 (concessions)
