G'day Ange,

>UN head in east timor: "Let me also assure the people of East Timor that

>transition towards independence."

I doubt the bloke is in any position to assure anybody of anything. Djakarta may not have any direct control over the militias, but I reckon it does over the UN. As I reckon East Timor might be a bubbling issue in the race for the presidency, we might have to wait for a safely entrenched president (if such is imaginable in the context of Indonesian politics today ) for any decisive action in the matter (ie. allowing or disallowing foreign soldiers in).

The good news seems to be that there's been no carnage since this morning. Just mebbe the Indonesian regulars have grabbed some control during this particularly decisive time, eh?

I might yet be as wrong as I have hitherto been on Wall St - which'd be most gratifying.

Cheers, Rob.
