as to the rest of your comment: i am not suggesting that there is a unified left in eastern europe - albeit food prices increases under state socialism seem to provide better motivation for people to take into the streets than any of the pathetic identity politics of the last ten years or so. autre temps, autre moeurs
what i was trying to do is scoring a point against the resident culturalist crowd (i'rather not name names) who seem to believe that ideas are more important than material facts.

dropping academic incomes may not be a bad thing after all - it may push the talking heads off their academic sinecures into the real world, which will finally end their infatuation with neoliberalism (i heard that maggie thatcher is still a folk hero in those quarters, no?). Who knows, perhaps some of them even become organic intellectuals?
