There is a passage in *Anti-Duhring* in which Engels complains about all the oddballs that cluster around the workers movement in England. As to the U.S., I can't remember where I read it, but I remember seeing quoted a poignant letter by Paul Baran in the late '50s about the hodgepodge of types that showed up to some meeting he had attended. At that time, I understand, he was wholly isolated at Stanford, and in the letter he is very tender of the oddballs.
