German trade surplus jumps to $6.43 bn in Feb
FRANKFURT: Germany's trade surplus widened to a bigger-than-expected 13.1
billion marks ($6.43 billion) in February from 5.2 billion in January as
exports jumped 10.8 percent, official data showed on Wednesday.
The current account swung to a surplus of 1.7 billion marks from a January
deficit of 15.5 billion marks, the Federal Statistics Office said. The
figures beat market forecasts for a trade surplus of 9.7 billion marks and a
current account deficit of 3.1 billion marks.
Exports rose 10.8 percent month-on-month and 19 percent year-on-year to
reach a value of 91.1 billion marks. Imports were little changed
month-on-month at 78.0 billion marks in February compared with January's
77.0 billion.
The export rise confirms an accelerating upturn in Germany's largest economy
aided by the weakness of the euro which boosts exports to non euro-zone
countries by making them cheaper.(AP)
