Very bad indeed. Singer was brave, clear-sighted, unfailingly sensible and tough-mindedly optimistic--not an easy thing for a person of the left to be these twenty years. His prose was pellucid; his political insight, keen. He was a superb speaker: I saw him last fall in Chicago touting his testement, Whose Millenium? Of him it was true that

. . . but for me The rulers sat easier. That was my hope,

as Brecht puts it. I can think of nothing finer to say about someone who was also a good person.

Daniel Singer, we will not forget.
