Gallup postpones legitimation crisis; query on polling

The last item in the Gallup poll shows Gore beating Bush if the
election was held today (47% to 44%). Which is identical to
Bush's lead in the polls prior to the election. Seems both
pre- and post-election poll results overshoot the election outcome
(tho I suppose its all in the margin of error).
Some quick questions that maybe Doug knows: How have the polling
orgs. responded to the actual near tie vote? Have the pollsters
taken heat over the pre-election calls? Or did the pollsters punt
with margin of error and too close to call claims? What was
the final result of the VNS exit poll?
