When I asked her what the guiding principles of US foreign policy would be under her administration, she responded: trade, stability and democracy. I asked about human rights. She said of course, that democracy flows, lickety-split, from trade. I pointed to the record in Nigeria, of Chevron's long relationship with a military dictatorship, and worse than that, employment of government military death squads to deal with local resistance and dissent -- she answered with the classic line: "Corporations can't pick and choose which governments they work with." Likewise, before she terminated the interview, I asked her whether, in Madeleine Albright's position she would have responded as Albright did to Leslie Stahl, about sanctions against Iraq being worth the price of half a million children's lives. She said, on that point she "shared Albright's view." She's a piece of work, that Rice, but smart for sure. Hates to talk about her past in segregated Birmingham, Bush must have required her to, as part of their deal. ugh. Sadly, radioforchange.com (the radio project of the working assets company) didn't start archiving tapes until last month, so I have no archive, but the interview took place the week after the Republican convention in Philadelphia, live. Cheers Laura
