Back in the 1970s Icke, before becoming Son of God (another stage in his downward spiral), was a goalkeeper at Leicester City FC, but he was unable to break into the first team due to the excellent Peter Shilton. The team itself - finalists in the forthcoming League Cup (Feb 27) - has recently acquired a reputation for lunacy and simultaneously one for playing boring football, independently of Icke, who still supports the club.

A staging post between apocalyptic environmentalism and his current perspectives was support for the Natural Law Party, 'yogic flying' and a belief in the transformative power of the purple shell suit. A remarkable thing about the 1992 general election overhere was the relatively easy ride the media and politicians gave to the NLP. They were incredulous of the policies, which emphasised the power of meditation to sort out economic problems, but a sense of relativism and respect for their 'religious beliefs' meant most took Icke's crowd far too seriously. Satirists left Icke alone too.
