My assumption is that he wants the job for a couple of years to pay off debts and cover the mortgage on their pricy home -- a responsibility that I assume was de minimus by Hillary -- while also getting the "private sector" experience that he will then use for his next run at the political stage -- whether in John Quincy Adams manner in Congress or in some other national or international role.

If Gore or Bradley win the Presidency, he's probably more likely to take it easy for a few years, but if George W. wins, taking a run at Congress would give him a chance to play politics from the other end of Pennsylvania avenue. In Congress, he would probably be able to grab substantive leadership slots quickly and in any case would have an overwhelming media focus that would give him de facto political leadership in many areas. So however odd, a run at Congress is less unlikely I think than many people would guess.

Out-of-office Bill is going to miss the political game and playing pundit, making speeches and playing golf probably won't cut it for him.
