Nah.  I grew up as a New England Episcopalian and have been totally 
marinated in both the U.S. educational system and media, and to me this 
country has seemed ever more bizarre my entire adult life.

I would use the same definition for oddity that a jurist famously used to 
define pornography:  "I know it when I see it."
