Perhaps the tragedy is that history doesn't repeat itself (not even 
as a farce), and a nation can't get social democracy at this point in 
history.  Those that became social democratic did so much earlier, 
and _their_ social democratic moments have already passed (as you can 
see, for instance, in Germany).
