This is bizarre. Had I (or you) been around in 1938 to so plot, I would not have been me and you would not have been you, so it simply is incoherent to speak of what anyone living now would have done if he/she/they had been someone else.
Would it have been a politically intelligent thing for a group of socialists in 1938 to have assassinated Hitler? Probably not. The Germany that Hitler had created would have gone on being that Germany, and might well have won the Great Russian-German War (miscalled World War II). On the other hand, such a Germany might have prevented the U.S. from ever becoming *The Super Power* -- and that would have been a break for everyone.
On the whole, it is usually sort of silly to hypothesize different past histories.
