LONDON, March 23 (Reuters) - British-based investment bank and asset management group Robert Fleming confirmed on Thursday it was in talks with U.S. bank Chase Manhattan on a merger.

Fleming, one of the UK's last remaining independent investment banking groups, said talks were at an early stage. The Financial Times had reported

on Thursday the bank was in discussions with Chase.

Fleming said in a statement: "The board of Robert Fleming Holdings Limited confirms that it is in discussions with the Chase Manhattan Corporation concerning a possible combination of their businesses."

The price tag on Flemings has been estimated at about three billion pounds, but the FT had said the final figure for any deal had not yet been agreed. ((London Newsroom +44 20 7542 7974, fax + 44 20 7583 3769, uk.equities.news at reuters.com))
