OARDC seminar: Dr. Richard Levins, of the Harvard University School of
Public Health, will give two seminars at the OARDC campus in Wooster on
April 6 and 7. His seminar on Thursday, April 6, "MANAGING CROP PROTECTION
IN AGROECOSYSTEMS" will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The one on Friday April 7,
"THE STRUGGLE FOR ECOLOGY IN CUBA", will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Both
seminars will take place in room 121C at Fisher Auditorium, OARDC in
Wooster, and will be video-linked to room 244 Kottman Hall on the OSU West
campus in Columbus. His research interests include evolutionary ecology,
philosophy of science, tropical agriculture, and plant breeding. Currently
he is concentrating on developing an ecological approach to health. Among
other things, he is examining the variability of health outcomes across
geographic areas such as counties in Kansas, health districts in Brazil and
Canada, and provinces in Cuba. Richard Levins and Richard Lewontin wrote
the book the "Dialectical Biologist". Levins is known for his scientific
research and for his philosophical and political ideas that were translated
into action in the 1960s when he decided to begin his research in Cuba. He
has continued working there ever since. Richard Levins has witnessed the
social and political evolution of Cuba since the 1960s until the present.
He has participated in the process that led Cuba to adopt low-input
agriculture based on ecological principles as a national policy.
Note: Kottman Hall is located on 2021 Coffey Road (OSU West campus).
