The book on the KGB by Gordievsky and Andrew asserts this quite strongly. That book has a lot of credibility as it, among other things, apparently accurately identified the "fifth man" of the "magnificent Cambridge Five," none other than the late John Cairncross, brother of the economist Alec Cairncross.
