Martin Duberman
Martin Duberman will present his recently published Left Out: The Politics of Exclusion, 1964-1999 (Basic Books). This volume contains thirty of his most important essays on topics ranging from slavery to the multicultural curriculum. This talk, however, will focus on his concluding piece: "The Divided Left: Identity Politics Versus Class."
Martin Duberman, who has published many books, essays and reviews, started his career as a historian of the African American experience. His magisterial biography of Paul Robeson is a lasting contribution. He is best known for his pioneering and prolific work in Gay Studies. He is the founder and President Emeritus of the first and most important center for Gay Studies, CLAGS, which is located at the CUNY Graduate Center.
