level, will probably take on mythic proportions as the shrewdest of 
political operators. But, in fact, his dalliance with Monica Lewinsky may 
well have cost Mr Gore the election. Some 44% of voters told pollsters that 
the Clinton scandals were either very or somewhat important to how they cast 
their vote, and three out of four of these voted for Mr Bush. This is 
despite the fact that two-thirds of voters polled also said that they 
thought the country was heading in the right direction economically, which 
should have given Mr Gore an easy victory."
