Speaking of paid mode, I was once a warm Eudora fan who gave up when they came up with this awful new interface, even before the chilis. If you like non-microsoft windows freeware mail programs, try the newest version of Pegasus. Much cleaner, IMHO, and much more powerful filtering capacities.
