There was an article in slate today about this

The author claimed that the commentators deliberately stall
for 30 minutes, until the poll results are in.  This saves
them from looking 'foolish' (where 'foolish' = 'against the polls').

However, he missed the trick that somebody here pointed out,
of polling people before the debate, and getting their 
opinion afterwards, to reduce bias.
