Christie's Sale Sets Record Price for Individual Cuban Cigar
By Jay Amberg Bloomberg Lifestyles
London, Oct. 9 -- A record for the sale of individual cigars was set at Christie's auction house in London when three Cuban cigars, Partagas Lusitanians, fetched 1,000 pounds each ($1,400), far surpassing the previous record of 660 pounds per cigar.
The record was set at Christie's annual fall cigar auction, featuring 400 lots of rare and highly collectible Cuban cigars and humidors.
The sale was Christie's largest ever. It earned a total of 500,000 pounds.
"This sale shows that there is a very strong collectible market for rare and aged Cuban cigars," said Brian Ebbesen, Christie's cigar specialist in London. "It was an exceptional sale with most of the buyers coming from Asia and North America and, amazing as it might seem, most of the cigars sold are for smoking, not for safe keeping."
