But U.S. support for Israel *stopped* the oil flowing for a little 
while in 1973. Protecting the Saudis and the Kuwaitis from (then) the 
Russians and (now) the Iranians would have been much more effective a 
way of making sure the oil keeps flowing in the absence of Israel...
