Job Description Job Title: Coordinator, Democratizing the Global Economy Project, National Peacebuilding Unit

Supervisor: Economic Justice Network Coordinator

Location: National Office, Philadelphia, PA

Background: Through a variety of educational programs, coalition-building within the Western Hemisphere, and direct communications with U.S. policy-makers addressing the Free Trade Area of the Americas Agreement, the Democratizing the Global Economy (DGE) Project lifts up the voices of people adversely impacted by the global economy. The DGE Project Coordinator is a member of the staff of the Peacebuilding Unit and works in coordination with the Economic Justice Concentration Network. The direction, goals, and strategies of the project are developed by the Project Team which is made up of staff from the AFSC's Community Relations and Peacebuilding Units and International Programs as well as staff from several AFSC regional offices.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Coordinator's job involves (a) providing leadership to the Project Team in the development and implementation of the Democratizing the Global Economy Project; (b) in coordination with the Development Office, developing and implementing annual fundraising plans

including reports to foundations; (c) coordinating the preparation of - on occasion writing - resource materials on the Free Trade Area of the Americas and related topics; (d) coordinating designated activities with collegial national and international organizations, such as the Alliance for Responsible Trade and the Hemispheric Social Alliance; (e) representing AFSC in selected national and international global economics forums, particularly on trade and investment issues in the Americas; and (f) overseeing and supporting the work of staff, consultants, and interns as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintain a continually developing expertise on organizations, movements, and issues pertaining to the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), particularly in areas relating to transparency, civil society participation, and labor rights. 2. Provide leadership, coordination and support to the Democratizing the Global Economy (DGE) Project Team. 3. In coordination with the DGE Project Team, develop project goals and objectives; with team, identify and implement strategies and action plans. 4. Develop and distribute resource materials on the FTAA and related topics. 5. Coordinate activities with collegial organizations, particularly the Alliance for Responsible Trade (ART) and the Hemispheric Social Alliance. 6. Participate on the steering committee of the Alliance for Responsible Trade. 7. Work within ART to expand and diversify its constituency, especially in the areas of race, gender, and class. 8. Develop and implement annual fundraising plans in coordination with the Development Office. Solicit funds from funders as appropriate. Write funding proposals, evaluations, and reports on uses of funds. 9. Develop and oversee project budget. 10. Coordinate communications strategies with Communications Department and other AFSC programs and units. Speak on behalf of the AFSC on global economics, particularly issues related to the Free Trade Area of the Americas, through public education forums, media interviews, and meetings with public figures and/or policy makers. 11. Supervise consultants, interns, and volunteers as needed. 12. Attend and participate in the various AFSC and Project Team and unit staff meetings, National Peacebuilding Unit Executive Committee meetings, and AFSC consultations as appropriate. Qualifications:

1. Extensive knowledge and expertise on global economic issues as reflected by three or more years experience organizing about and the study of these issues.

2. Demonstrated ability to research and analyze complex economic issues and to communicate these issues effectively to a wide audience both orally and in writing. Demonstrated analytical and communications skills; facility in written and oral communications in English and ability to write or collaborate on articles for diverse audiences. Fluency in Spanish desirable.

3. Ability to participate in consultative planning and decision-making with staff and committees. Ability to function within a complex international organization, and within the framework of decision-making by consensus.

4. Experience in program development and evaluation.

5. Relevant organizing experience on global economic issues.

6. Demonstrated capacity to analyze economic injustices and to formulate alternatives, utilizing perspectives that challenge gender, race, and class oppression.

7. Experience in writing and editing successful funding proposals and reports. Ability to work closely with AFSC Development Office in building fundraising strategies and outreach to funders. Capacity to articulate program initiatives to funders.

8. Demonstrated ability to help groups plan, focus, and set priorities; ability to give attention to detail and meet deadlines. Ability to take

direction from supervisor and project team as well as to take initiative and to work independently.

9. Experience with developing, interpreting, and monitoring a program budget.

10. Experience with developing a communications strategy and being interviewed by the media.

11. Ability to build strong coalitions among organizations. Demonstrated ability to relate to a wide range of people, including staff, community organizers, religious representatives, movement activists, public officials, policy-makers, people from other non-governmental organizations, young people, and those identified in AFSC's affirmative action program.

Ability to relate to and form productive relationships with diverse organizations.

13. Strong facility with Microsoft Word and electronic communications programs. Knowledge of Excel and Access programs and the web is desirable.

14. Ability to travel, to attend evening and weekend meetings, speaking engagements and events.

16. Commitment to Quaker values, testimonies and process. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.

17. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and

considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, age, class, nationality, religion, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities and the ability to represent those issues.

Note: This job is for a two-year period. Any continuation of the position for more than two years is dependent on the raising of additional funds.

Compensation: Salary Range #15 starts at $40,662/year - Exempt - Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and workers compensation and Social Security.
