Ironically, the decline of classical "republican" notions of rhetoric may be
related to the decline in collectivist rhetoric, and may explain the failure
of American Marxism as an externally (state) and internally (party) enforced
"closure" of discursive space. Careful to avoid idealism, though...or as I
like to call it, discursive determinism.
James Arnt Aune's 1993 _Rhetoric and Marxism_ details this parallell decline
of republicanism and Marxism. He's a bit of an idealist, but is considered
"red as a baboon's ass" by his colleagues in communication and rhetorical
studies.
