Or as St. Thomas (or at least a modern french follower) put it, distinguer pour unir. One could elaborate a huge spectrum of discourses necesary both to produce knowledge and make it available where needed, including discourses which operate primarily to provide relaxation from various other levels. All those discourses (or 'levels' or 'contexts' of discourse) are necessary preconditions for all the others. One minute DP is bellyaching because communists dare to enjoy talking to each other instead of always having their nose to the agitational grindstone. Tomorrow he will be bellyaching that communists have no sense of humor. Personally, I don't think LBO is the context for smashing the state.
