Yes, the savvier elements within the anti-globalization movement realized after 9/11 that fighting war and militarism was already part of our goals.

The leaders are certainly moving towards using police violence more. That's already pretty obvious on the streets--nonviolence is becoming less of an option when the cops will use violence against any form of dissent.

The hitch in their plans is that they can't find enough people to become cops or soldiers. It's already been widely reported that there was no increase in recruitment in the military after 9/11. I'm sure they are having the same problem when it comes to hiring police. Clinton's vaunted program to hire 100,000 cops only scraped up around 45,000 new cops, many of whom were so bad that they had to be fired.

The only hope for the police state is really a bad economic situation. This might prompt more desperate working class people to become cops, but at the same time there will be more working class people who will have no compulsions about throwing rocks in the streets. Another problem is finding the money to pay for this all, which Bush and company are rapidly squandering.

I wonder what's going to happen when Bush is backed against the harsh realities of all of this and realizes that there is no "cheat key."

INTERNATIONALISM IN PRACTICE

An American soldier in a hospital explained how he was wounded: He said, "I was told that the way to tell a hostile Vietnamese from a friendly Vietnamese was to shout ‘To hell with Ho Chi Minh!’ If he shoots, he’s unfriendly. So I saw this dude and yelled ‘To hell with Ho Chi Minh!’ and he yelled back, ‘To hell with President Johnson!’ We were shaking hands when a truck hit us."
