IRS Abuse

There is an official IRS Office of the Taxpayer Advocate. You can find it on the IRS web site. These people are not 'in the bag.' They are worth consulting. I'd be interested to hear about your experience with them.

The hearings were mostly bullshit -- a way for Congress to jawbone the IRS into doing less auditing of taxpayers, except for EITC beneficiaries, who are audited more.

I couldn't say what you need because you have not provided enough details about your situation. If you're in Chicago, also consult the Center for Law and Human Services. They advise people on coping w/the income tax and IRS. (312-252-0280).

good luck.

Just had a wicked encounter with an IRS agent -- threats, nastiness, yelling -- over the back taxes I owe (and concede owing). Now, several weeks ago I had a much more constructive and peaceful discussion with another IRS agent as we searched for ways to pay off my debt. Problem is, when you call, you don't know who you're gonna get. So, my question --my plea -- is: Do taxpayers who acknowledge their debt and are working to pay it off have any rights regarding treatment by the IRS? Weren't there hearings about the abuse I received today, and wasn't the IRS supposed to stop this? Can I go to my congressperson, or do I need a lawyer on top of an accountant? Any info either here or to me personally would be much appreciated.
