msb replied: The Ashcroft as Buchanan ploy has some promise (i.e., the historical revisionism). But it has little to do with the White nomination.

me: I'm alarmed by the Southern Secessionists, and I think Ashcroft is one of them. I see them as a conspiracy out to destroy the United States mainly so that they can continue their crimes at the local level without fear of interference from the Feds.

They were furious at civil rights in the 50s, and felt betrayed by an abrogation of an understanding in force since the 1870s.

So, ok, I'm a conspiracy nut, but there it is. I vaguely remember some of Marx's analysis of our Civil War, and I think his comments on the Southern oligarchy's ability to formulate a policy and carry it out over the years is right on. They are more politically skillful, Marx said (IIRC), than the Northern capitalists.

On the other hand, maybe destroying the United States is something this group should consider. Maybe it would reduce us to several mutually suspicious states (what Madison feared), and lead to the end of our imperialism.

Hmm. There might be several imperialisms then, but each would be less powerful.
