Shakespeare would be surprised to hear it. He was a businessman in the business of providing popular entertainment for money. He even makes fun of Art for Arts Sake in Hamlet, making H out to be a snob who loves the Player's awful Hecuba speech, sneering, "'Twas caviar to the general [the ordinary public]." And don't think S disn't know the speech was awful either.
