It's one thing for a formation of properly-
outfitted cops to be facing a rock-throwing mob.
In that context you are right.  But if a couple
of cops wearing anything you like are threatened
in the way the ones in this case were, then it's
time to call upon Mssrs. Smith & Wesson.

The rules of engagement seem to have broken down
more in Genoa than anywhere else to date. From
what I've heard, the bulk of offenses were on
the police, no surprize there.

Crowds throwing rocks are exactly what you are trained to deal with, without
shooting people.

I'll point out that UK police deal with riots including rocks and petrol
bombs
while not even owning firearms.
