Why do they have to do it violently? The Amish quite effectively rejected the dubious charms of modernity, such as the automobile (although they selectively adopoted other, such as railroad or compressed air power), but did so in a remarkably non-violent way.

Isn't anti-modernism but a smokescreen to cover up the perverse fascination with violence by self-styled (male) leaders of the people.
