It occurs to me that the Social Democrats murdered Lux & Lieb, and suppressed the S-Bund by military force, not giving it much of a chance to do anything for the working class. I have stood by the site in the Landwehr Kanal where the SDP's soldiery chucked her in with a fractured skull to drown. (There is a rather nice monument, her name in huge metal letters, and a plaque that, in proper Germanic Richtigkeit, list all of her titles (Frau Dr. Dr. Rosa Luxemberg)). Whether the S-Bund had a chance, who knows. But its chance was the missed chance for the development of a humane socialism in the 20th century--and maybe the 12st, though it is perhaps early days to say.
