STEPHEN GLASS, MASTER OF INVENTION, HAS A NEW GIG
The Washington City Paper published a story on its Web site today revealing that former New Republic writer Stephen Glass, whom colleague Ruth Shalit once described as the "Milli Vanilli of journalism," has obtained a clerkship with the D.C. Superior Court after graduating Magna Cum Laude from the Georgetown University Law Center. The author of the story, City Paper staff writer Jason Cherkis, says he decided to do the piece after a colleague recognized Glass while he was clerking for U.S. Superior Court Judge A. Franklin Burgess Jr. Glass obtained fame, and later notoriety, for his mostly fabricated, too-good-to-check stories about things like a trader altar/shrine to Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan. "(I) was interested in him because he's in our backyard and he's newsworthy," says Cherkis. "He's also an important figure because of what his transitions says about the subcultures of D.C." Glass was polite, but refused to talk to Cherkis. "He didn't seem at all flustered. I think he almost expected that someone would call eventually."
