Electrics, IMO, are great for short hops in cities. Interestingly, electrics were prevalent in the U.S. from about 1890-1910. And the primary problems with them then were that the range was too short and the charging time too long. Just like now. The battery technology unfortunately hasn't improved much in 100+ years.

A great book on the early days of the electric is "The Electric Car and the Burden of History" by David A. Kirsch.
