Up until recently most psychiatrists were fairly friendly to St. John's Wort, with the proviso that it was effective only for mild depression. There has been some recent research calling into question both its effectiveness and its safety. Similarly with exercise -- some recent research has pretty clearly established that my personal experience with exercise is the general rule: it helps _during_, and _only_ during the exercise itself, and the effect disappears as soon as one ceases exercising.

Kelly's and Marta's arguments are pretty convincing -- but because the medical profession is lacking does _not_ mean that alternatives to it are not also seriously lacking.
