The line from Wallace Stevens you quote gives an answer to the 
question you ask.  Sad men may very well be more attracted to 
dramatic metaphors of tragic martyrdom (and transcendence & 
redemption through it) than to comic ones (the gods of Olympus are 
often funny in their lusty ways).
