O'Brien, Philip. 1984. "Authoritarianism and Monetarism in Chile." Socialist Review, No. 77, pp. 45-79.

77-8: Hayek in a 1981 interview with Chilean newspaper El Mercurio said that dictatorship "may be a necessary system for a transition period. At times it is necessary for a country that there is some form of dictatorial power. As you understand it is possible for a dictator to govern in a liberal way. And it is also possible that democracy governs with a total lack of liberalism. My personal preference is for a liberal dictator and not for a democratic government lacking in liberties"
