Personally, I loved the pre-winsock days when I'd just log in to the Unix server and type commands. No fucking fake buttons or make-believe desktop.

Well, all that nostalgia is still available. Get an old box and install FreeBSD. It will look, feel, and act just like those servers you remember.
When I am at work, I usually log into my IP (a unix server) from a throw away box (via rsh or rlogin) which also runs FreeBSD and either down load the mail or read it on the server account during lunch.
Just for you, Hakki, I did this on cli using the mail program---you know the real (and also brain-dead) `mail' program.
