Brussels November 02, 2001 (ICFTU OnLine): The following is a selection of next week's events. This selection has been prepared for the information of subscribers to the ICFTU's OnLine service, and does not necessarily reflect the position of the ICFTU.

Special - Global Unions Day of Action: The following is a compilation of events connected with the Global Unions Day of Action which coincides with the WTO Ministerial Meeting in Doha, Qatar (November 09-13). The theme for the Day of Action is "Making Globalisation Work for People" and is being co-ordinated for the Global Unions group by the ICFTU, the world's largest trade union body. As new information about activities is still coming in, we recommend checking the updated version of the calendar.

November 05: A Forum on Globalisation is being organised by Jobs with Justice in Dallas, where the Dallas AFL-CIO leader, Gene Freeland, will be representing the labour movement in a panel discussion. http://www.jwj.8k.com

November 05-09: Turkish trade unions KESK & DISK, both affiliated to the ICFTU, is sponsoring a “March Against Unemployment, Corruption and War and for Global Equality, Justice and Peace”. Unemployed workers, retired people, young people and trade unionists will converge on Ankara on November 09, starting from 5 different cities (Edirne, Gaziantep, Samsun and Diyabakir). The marchers will be welcomed by members of the Labour Platform in every city visited.

November 05-11: A Conference under the theme “Southern Initiative on Globalisation and Trade Union Rights” organised by Korean affiliate, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) will take place in Seoul. Progressive unionists will gather to tackle issues such as strengthening organisation in the new workforce, globalisation and workplace change and action plan for unity, capacity, power through global campaigning. November 05-09: British TUC is organising an awareness raising drive highlighting the effects that globalisation is having on workers around the world. The initiative should reach between 1,000 and 1,500 workplace representatives who will be encouraged to use the materials provided by the TUC to promote activities in their own workplace to coincide with the day of action. http://www.tuc.org.uk/international/tuc-3836-f0.cfm

November 06: The Lithuanian Trade Union Unification is holding an awareness-raising campaign through the national press on the impact of globalisation in their country.

November 08: An ICFTU Public Conference on Development and Workers’ Rights will take place at the Qatar International Exhibition. ICFTU General Secretary Bill Jordan, WTO Director General Mike Moore and EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy are among the participants.

November 08: The Asia-Pacific Workers Solidarity Links and Arena will be holding a public meeting under the theme ”WTO and workers resistance” in Auckland, New Zealand.

November 08: The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), in conjunction with the Communications Workers of America, Jobs with Justice, and other unions and civil society partners, will co-sponsor a peaceful vigil at the office of the United States Trade Representative in the late afternoon of November 08.

November 08-09: The Belgian ICFTU-affiliated FGTB, is scheduled to hold a press conference and will be distributing pamphlets in all workplaces on November 09 to raise awareness on the impact of globalisation for Belgium.

November 08-09: The Dutch national trade union centres FNV and CNV, together with Churches, Islamic and Humanist organisations will take part in a “Conference on Globalisation and Identity”. They will gather to create a better understanding of each others views, opinions and activities concerning the theme of the Conference and to improve the quality of their policies in the area.

November 08-09: In Spain, a Seminar called "Human and Labour Rights, a new reference for international cooperation" organised by the foundation Paz y Solidaridad and Spanish ICFTU affiliate CC.OO is scheduled to take place in Aragon. http://www.rsc.es/pazysolidaridadaragon

November 09: An High-level international trade union delegation, led by ICFTU General Secretary Bill Jordan, will be promoting the demands of the Day of Action and a more detailed trade union position to the delegates of the WTO Ministerial Meeting in Qatar. http://www.icftu.org/displaydocument.asp?Index=991213933&Language=EN

November 09: The Malaysian Trade Union Congress, affiliated to the ICFTU will, be running an awareness-raising campaign where some 10,000 pamphlets will be circulated at workplaces. A number of affiliates of the MTUC will hold 20 to 30 minutes briefings at workplaces to highlight concerns about globalisation.

November 09: In Italy, the Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Lavoratori (CISL) will be holding a Conference in Naples which will be focusing on linkages between global issues and local action.

November 09: The Mauritius Labour Congress will be holding a “Forum on the Negative Effects of Globalisation on Workers”. Also scheduled is a protest March in the streets of Port-Louis, followed by joint press conferences.

November 09: Organised by the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, JTUC-RENGO, a street campaign is due to take place in Tokyo. RENGO’s affiliates will organise a street campaign in front of the Shinjuku station to protest against poverty, oppression of human rights, inequality, child labour, terrorism and discrimination which have been caused by the rapid pace of globalisation.

November 09: In Nigeria, the ICFTU affiliate, the Nigerian Labour Congress is organising WTO-related rallies and industrial action all over the country.

November 09: Jobs with Justice - North Texas Chapter, is scheduled to protest against the downside of globalisation and the WTO by holding an “information picket” in a key Dallas venue.

November 09: The ICFTU affiliate in the Czech Republic, CMKOS is organising a mass media campaign to inform how trade unions perceive the current process of Globalisation and on the role of the WTO and other international institutions in this process.

November 09: The All Russian Confederation of Labour, VKT, affiliated to the ICFTU, is due to hold a Conference on Globalisation in Moscow.

November 09: LO Denmark will launch a publication on the impact of Globalisation which will also be accompanied by a media awareness campaign.

November 09: In Tunisia, the UGTT will be holding workplace teach-ins on globalisation in over 500 workplaces in the country, and will release a special edition of its trade union journal "Echaab".

November 09: In Spain, CC.OO. and UGT, both affiliated to the ICFTU, along with other citizens’ groups will be launching the Barcelona Social Forum. In Sagunto, the Day of Action will be highlighted in a conference related to Globalisation and Trade Union Rights, prepared by the Fundación Paz y Solidaridad.

November 09: Turkish trade union TÜRK-IS, HAK-IS, DISK and KESK and 11 other organisations representing the civil servants confederations, associations of architects, engineers, doctors, retired and elderly, will participate in a Labour Platform meeting.

November 09: Forca Sindical, one of the ICFTU affiliates in Brazil, is holding a Conference under the theme “Globalisation and its Impact on Society” in Sao Paulo with national and international speakers discussing the harmful effects of economic integration and the policies of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

November 09: In Oslo, arranged by a coalition of more than 30 organisations, including trade unions, the environmental movement, development organisations, peasants' association, ATTAC Norway, political parties, youth organisations and others, a demonstration is due to take place. Speakers will be the Vice President of the Norwegian Union of Municipal Employees, the President of ATTAC Norway and the previous President of Friends of the Earth, Norway, currently MP for the Socialist Left Party. http://www.nkf.no/nkf/omstilling/aksjoner/velferds.htm

November 09: In New Zealand, ASTE will be organising workshops on GATS and on Education which will be open to all education union members and others interested in defending the public education system. The Wellington LAC will be having a “Global Unions Day of Action Rally” in Midland Park, Wellington. On November 10, the ICFTU affiliate in the country, NZCTU, is scheduled to hold a WTO protest rally in Auckland.

November 09: In Iran, workers’ assemblies and information meetings are scheduled to take place under the auspices of the Workers' House of Iran.

November 09: In Mexico, the Solidarity Center/AFL-CIO will be holding a “Working Women’s Conference against Violence against Women” in Juarez. The conference will be focused on women working in EPZs and the violence they experience in the workplace and in their communities.

November 09-11: The ICFTU affiliate in Hong Kong, the HKCTU, will be distributing leaflets in the workplace on November 9 under a “Coalition on anti-Globalisation Poverty”, followed by an open march and petition to be handed over to the Central government Office. The main demands will be on job security and workers rights.

November 09-11: The Bangladesh Mukto Sramik Federation (BMSF) will be holding meetings and demonstrations in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Sylhet.

November 09: In India, the nine major national trade union centres will be calling for massive demonstrations, rallies, public meetings, petitions focusing on the Day of Action demands so that the largest mobilisation of workers can be achieved.

November 10: Swiss union of public service workers (VPÖD), along with trade unions and NGOs will be taking part in a public event in Geneva.

November 11: In Qatar, SOLIDAR, a European NGO coalition will be having a public discussion under the theme “Strengthening Workers’ Rights in a Global Economy” at the NGO Conference Centre.

Other Events - November 05-11

November 05-11: Landmine Action Week, organised to increase public awareness of the effects of the use of landmines, is scheduled to take place. The week is organised by the charity Landmine Action.

November 07: The ICFTU Co-ordinating Committee for the Middle East will be holding its 10th meeting in Brussels.

November 07-09: The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is scheduled to hold rolling protests across the country against the government's privatisation programme. Demonstrations will begin in the Western Cape and the former western Transvaal on November 7, proceed the following day the Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and Northern Province and end on November 9 in KwaZulu/Natal, Mpumalanga and Witwatersrand.

November 07-10: The 13th General Assembly of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland. On November 11-14, the Council of Delegates of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement will be meeting, also in Geneva.

November 10: The ICFTU/ILO Workers’ Group Meeting will take place in Geneva.

November 10-11: The Confederate Congress of the National Workers Confederation of Senegal will be taking place in Dakar.

November 11-15: The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) will be holding its 30th World Congress in Sydney Australia. Approximately 800 Congress delegates from 101 countries will come to Sydney to represent the 23 million metalworkers worldwide who are members of the IMF. Congress discussions will focus on the this year’s theme “Solidarity for Metalworking Jobs and Sustainable Growth”, and on how to deal with global challenges.
