we invite you to a discussion on middle eastern culture and politics, with the hopes of shedding light on afghanistan's socio-political history and putting our current relations with that country into a more in-depth context. featuring a discussion with michael griffin, author of 'reaping the whirlwind: the taliban movement in afghanistan', an interpretative history in which he paints a picture of the taliban's origins and beliefs, its religious and political ethos, and the character of its particular brand of islamic fundamentalism. providing some global economic perspective is journalist doug henwood, editor of 'the left business observer' newsletter and author of 'wall street: how it works and for whom' and the forthcoming 'a new economy.' we also welcome a distinguished guest at our previous forum, hamid dabashi, a professor in sociology of culture and islamic studies who has published such works as 'authority in islam: from the rise of muhammad to the establishment of the umayyads.'
