Howard's October Surprise

Australian PM Michael Howard, winner of yesterday's election that was fought
on a platform of xenophobia on both sides, clearly owes his victory to the
refugees against which he has defended his country so steadfastly. Two days
after announcing the election, Howard accused refugees of throwing their
children into the sea to gain asylum, thus demonizing the boat people in the
aim of winning over bleeding-heart waverers. After weeks of official
blackout and spin, disgusted naval officers are finally speaking out to
reveal the government's barefaced lie.
